What does it mean being a dog handler? Being a dog handler requires an in-depth knowledge of dog behavior along with a passion for training. Being a skilled law enforcement professional, a dog handler is highly knowledgeable about dog behavior, knowing what their canine partner is signaling during a detection job. So how hard is being a dog handler? We’ve teamed up with professional dog handler, Corey Herren, to help answer some important questions on dog behavior and training. “A dogs behavior is a reflection on their training, if you don't put the work in, It will show both personally and professionally“, he says.
We’ve been following you on Instagram for quite a while, tell me a little about K9 Bragi.
K9 Bragi is a 7 year old Belgian Malinois and has been with me since he was 5 months old. He was trained by St. Michael's Shepherds, here locally to us (Ohio).
What got you interested in being a dog handler?
The dogs themselves, the ability to learn so quickly & easy with no fear of doing what is asked of them. The partnership with the dog & myself knowing he will always have my back.
What are the most common mistakes made by pet owners in relation to disciplining their dogs?
Inexperienced people using e-collars as a source of punishment instead of a guide or correction. Proper e-collar training is essential for the dog & owner.

When used correctly, the e-collar is the best hands free correction and method of control out there.
Becoming a dog handler requires a high level of training and commitment to the profession. What would you Recommend to any new dog handler or trainer?
Practice patience & control always!
Control your frustrations as your dog feels your emotions coming down the leash. Allowing yourself to get frustrated does you or your dog no favors. Walk away, take a break, come back when emotions are under control.
What is the most rewarding part of your job?
The most rewarding part of my job is going to work with my best friend everyday, getting drugs off the street and away from kids.
